Processes Controlling Transfer of Fine-Grained Sediment Within and Between Channels and Flats on Intertidal Flats

چکیده

A long-term goal of our sediment transport and accumulation investigations is to link sedimenttransport processes to the formation and preservation of event beds in sediment deposits. The general aim of this project is to investigate how forcing processes affect the sediment-transport dynamics that act to import or export fine-grained sediment in intertidal regions. We strive to understand how the delicate balance of ebb and flood sediment fluxes is maintained to create a stable (or unstable) tidal flat complex that is characterized by tidal channels and variable seabed stability. Our goal is to answer the question: What influence do tidal (semidiurnal, fortnightly), riverine and other seasonal (winds/waves, precipitation temperature, and biological) processes have on the transfer of sediment between tidal-flat environments, and how is this manifested in terms of channel and flat deposits?

Random Forest Classification of Sediments on Exposed Intertidal Flats Using Alos-2 Quad-polarimetric Sar Data

Coastal zones are one of the world’s most densely populated areas and it is necessary to propose an accurate, cost effective, frequent, and synoptic method of monitoring these complex ecosystems. However, misclassification of sediments on exposed intertidal flats restricts the development of coastal zones surveillance. With the advent of SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) satellites, polarimetric S...

Wind waves in shallow microtidal basins and the dynamic equilibrium of tidal flats

[1] Shallow microtidal basins are characterized by extensive areas of tidal flats that lie within specific ranges of elevation. These landforms are inherently flat and their evolution strongly depends on the balance between sedimentary and erosive processes. Here we present a stochastic point model for tidal flat evolution to study the influence of tidal currents and wind waves on tidal flat eq...

Remote sensing of intertidal morphological change in Morecambe Bay , 3 U . K . , between 1991 and 2007

15 16 Tidal Flats are important examples of extensive areas of natural environment that remain 17 relatively unaffected by man. Monitoring of tidal flats is required for a variety of 18 purposes. Remote sensing has become an established technique for the measurement of 19 topography over tidal flats. A further requirement is to measure topographic changes in 20 order to measure sediment budgets...

Critical bifurcation of shallow microtidal landforms in tidal flats and salt marshes.

Shallow tidal basins are characterized by extensive tidal flats and salt marshes that lie within specific ranges of elevation, whereas intermediate elevations are less frequent in intertidal landscapes. Here we show that this bimodal distribution of elevations stems from the characteristics of wave-induced sediment resuspension and, in particular, from the reduction of maximum wave height cause...
